June 2018 Letter
Dear brethren,
The Book of Zachariah is one of the prophetic books that carry many prophecies about our Lord Jesus Christ. It comes after the Book of Isiah the prophet in the number of prophecies about Christ and the New Testament, and after the Book of Ezekiel in the number of visions.
Zachariah lived during the period following return from exile in Babylon, and his message was to urge the people to rebuild the temple. Those who were taken in exile were allowed to return back to rebuild their temple, but the work stopped because each one got engaged and busy in his own interest. Haggai and Zachariah the prophets confronted the people with their duty and encouraged them to complete it, for the Jews believed that the Messiah would come and inhabit this temple. Thus rebuilding the temple would be the entrance to the age of the Messiah. And this actually happened when Jesus Christ entered this temple several times.
In this letter, we present to you some of the prophecies about our Lord Jesus Christ and the New Testament, hoping this will encourage you to read and study this interesting book.
- His incarnation: “Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion! For behold, I am coming and I will dwell in your midst, says the Lord” (Zac 2: 10).
- He’s the cornerstone: “And he shall bring forth the capstone With shouts of Grace, grace to it!” (Zac 4: 7).
- His royal entrance to Jerusalem: “Rejoice greatly, O daughter of Zion! Shout, O daughter of Jerusalem! Behold, your King is coming to you; He is just and having salvation, Lowly and riding on a donkey, A colt, the foal of a donkey” (Zac 9: 9).
- His betrayal by thirty pieces of silver: “Then I said to them, If it is agreeable to you, give me my wages; and if not, refrain. So they weighed out for my wages thirty pieces of silver” (Zac 11: 12).
- His wounds: “And one will say to him, `What are these wounds between your arms?’ Then he will answer, `Those with which I was wounded in the house of my friends” (Zac 13: 6).
- Piercing Him: “then they will look on Me whom they pierced. Yes, they will mourn for Him as one mourns for his only son, and grieve for Him as one grieves for a firstborn” (Zac 12: 10).
- He is the suffering shepherd: “Strike the Shepherd, And the sheep will be scattered; Then I will turn My hand against the little ones” (Zac 13: 7).
- The darkness in the middle of the day when he was crucified: “It shall be one day Which is known to the Lord–Neither day nor night. But at evening time it shall happen That it will be light” (Zac 14: 7).
- Gentiles will believe in Him, despite the hostility of the Jews to them: “Many nations shall be joined to the Lord in that day, and they shall become My people. And I will dwell in your midst. Then you will know that the Lord of hosts has sent Me to you” (Zac 2: 11).
- Jews will be scattered among nations because of their rejection of Christ: “But I scattered them with a whirlwind among all the nations which they had not known. Thus the land became desolate after them, so that no one passed through or returned; for they made the pleasant land desolate” (Zac 7: 14).
- Jews will be introduced to Christian faith in the end of days: “I will strengthen the house of Judah, And I will save the house of Joseph. I will bring them back, Because I have mercy on them. They shall be as though I had not cast them aside; For I am the Lord their God, And I will hear them” (Zac 10: 6).
May the blessings of St. Mary & St Mercurius, the fasting of holy apostles be with us all.
